The Best Pokémon ROM Hacks and Fan Made Games

Pokémon Mega Power

If you're a fan of the video game Pokémon Emerald, then you'll want to check out Mega Power. This Pokémon ROM hack takes the characters on a quest to make the strongest Pokémon through lots and lots of experimentation. But all of that experimentation comes at a hefty cost. Just as funds start to run out, a mysterious fancier turns up and sends you on a new adventure.

Could it be that your fancier is not on a quest for knowledge but rather a quest to manipulate your strongest Pokémon creations? You'll have to play the game to find out more.

Pokémon Mega Power contains three new areas (or regions), and it builds on the available Pokémon found in the original game. It even features all of the Mega Evolutions and Generations IV, V, VI, and VII.

Pokémon Light Platinum

Pokémon Light Platinum builds on the popular Pokémon Ruby game, allowing you to explore the Zhery Region while meeting and battling brand new rivals. You can pit your skills against the region's awesome Gym Leaders, Elite Four, and of course, the Champion. You can even capture and train new Pokémon from the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh Regions.

Don't forget to check out all of the neat moves and items you can collect while playing the game. You can even participate in special events and the Pokémon World Championship! This game boasts over twenty hours of gameplay, building on an already incredible Pokémon game.

Pokémon Flora Sky

Pokémon Emerald is a game that keeps giving thanks to all of the talented gamers who create Pokémon ROM hacks, and Pokémon Flora Sky is another great addition to the world. In this brand-new story, you can catch over 360 Pokemon, encounter animated sprites, and find new moves and items.

Hacks

Pokémon Flora Sky may not be perfect, but Nintendo liked it enough to borrow some of the story elements for their new releases. The progression system in Pokémon Flora Sky is next level because it doesn't require grinding. This means to complete the story and progress through the areas; you get to go on a treasure hunt!

If you're familiar with Pokémon Emerald, you'll be pleased to know that Rotom is much easier to catch in the ROM hack, but Ralts proves to be a bit more challenging. This happens to be a reversal of how the original game allowed Pokémon to be caught.

Pokémon Blazed Glazed

Best

Pokémon Blazed Glazed is another ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald adapted from an older version of Pokémon Glazed (another ROM hack). Once your characters reach the age of maturity, you're given a Pokémon of your choice to start on your brand new quest. Of course, to further the storyline along, you'll quickly find that the world has dissolved into chaos, and you'll have to become the savior of both the real and Pokémon world.

In a shocking turn of events, Pikachu is stalking you for revenge (uh-oh!), and you'll have to deal with them throughout the game.

If you played the previous ROM hack, you'd be pleased to know that Pokémon Blazed Glazed has been loaded with many improvements. The biggest one is that you're able to choose five starters, explore new regions, and play with Dream World Pokémon. They also added Pokémon from Generation IV through VI, included new moves, and changed the spawn locations of the Pokémon.

Pokémon Glazed

If the last Pokémon ROM hack caught your interest, you might want to try out the original Pokémon Glazes. While Pokémon Blazed Glazed is an improved version of this hack, it's undeniable that Pokémon Glazed is a fantastic ROM hack.

It's a coming-of-age story set to the world's backdrop falling apart the main character as he works to become a full-fledged Pokémon trainer. Fortunately, part of his journey is saving the world. When it comes to gameplay, it's similar to its predecessor. You can choose from five different starters, explore three regions (Tunod, Johto, and Rankor), and you get to catch Dream World and Legendary Pokémon.

This game features some fun opportunities to gain experience and money as you battle trainers and Gym Leaders. This Pokémon ROM hack is a lot of fun, even if there is a better update available.

Best

Pokémon Theta Emerald EX

It should come as no surprise that Pokémon Emerald, one of the franchise's most popular game, is also one of the most popular games to create ROM hacks from. Pokémon Theta Emerald EX is another one of these hacks that improves something that is already beloved.

There are over 700 Pokémon to catch in the game, compared to the 600 that you can catch in previous game versions. This includes new abilities, TMs, HMs, and Mega Evolutions, as well as Primal Revisions. You can even find new Fairy-types in the game, with the new Repel mechanic.

Another fun and purely aesthetic element are that you can run inside of buildings!

Pokémon Mega Emerald X and Y Edition

After waiting and waiting, Pokémon Mega Emerald X and Y Edition are finally complete. This Pokémon ROM hack is a bit mundane, but it follows the typical Pokémon adventure game route with a few fun twists and turns along the way.

Overall, this game is similar to Pokémon Emerald, but you'll be pleased to discover that the new Pokémon have sprites edited into the game! Pokémon Mega Emerald X and Y also prides itself on having Generation I to VI (though not all of them) available throughout the game. You can, however, find all of the Legendary Pokémon, which is a fun treat!

If you are looking to spend a bunch of hours into a variation of Emerald, then this is the one to go for!

Pokémon Liquid Crystal

If you're anything like most fans who played Pokémon Dark Rising, you're probably still traumatized. Fortunately, Pokémon Liquid Crystal ish here to soothe your wounds. The game is bright, colorful, and lends itself to leisurely gameplay.

You can revisit the Kanto and Johto regions, embracing that sense of adventure that Pokémon games do so well.

While the game doesn't bring a lot of new content to the table, it serves as an apology to fans who were disappointed that they couldn't keep their Pokémon when the game progressed from Gameboy Advance Nintendo DS.

Pokémon Gaia

Pokémon Gaia is a ROM hack that uses Pokémon FireRed as its base, spawning a far more intricate story than the original. Thousands of years ago, the old civilization worshiped gods until an earthquake consumed the upper areas — now you are tasked to prevent another cataclysmic calamity.

Travel through the regions of Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos while you fight against time to save the Region of Orbetus and completing the task Professor Redwood has set you out on. The mechanics are new, allowing players to use Mega Evolutions, Fairy-types, and explore underwater locations.

This game is truly a fantastic ROM hack and could easily feel like a spin-off game created by the developers themselves.

Pokémon Ultra Shiny Gold Sigma

While this ROM hack is another game based on Pokémon FireRed, Pokémon Ultra Shiny Gold Sigma is based on the classic Gold, Silver, and Crystal games. But there are new and exciting plot points and elements that are well worth the playthrough.

When you start, you have a roster of over 800 Pokémon (from Generation I to VII) to choose from. You also have Mega Evolutions, Miracle Exchange, and many other cool trading evolutions. EVs and IVs are shown on the menu so that you can avoid complicated calculations during your trades.

Pokémon Adventures Red Chapter

This ROM hack emerged as a front runner in the Poke Community Hack of the Year contest from 2013 and 2015, which makes it no surprise that we're still talking about it five years later. This hack is based on Pokémon FireRed and is part of the official Pokémon Adventure Collections.

The story follows along with the Pokémon Adventure Manga and contains most of the events, with a few events expanded upon for longer gameplay. Since it follows a canonical story so closely, you can't pick your own starter Pokémon. Don't worry; you will be able to choose your own later in the game.

This ROM hack features many cool details; a full catalog of catchable Pokémon, root fossils, and so much more.

Pokémon Dark Cry

Pokémon Dark Cry has one of the most intricate stories on this list. At the start of the game, you wake up and realize you're in a mysterious cavern. As you explore the cavern, you find a man with an “R” on his shirt and attempt to stop him without success. From there, a giant earthquake occurs, and a shadow approaches you… just in time for you to wake up a second time and discover you had been dreaming.

Only… your dream slowly becomes a reality.

Pokémon Dark Cry features a new region called Trion, and you can read the PokePaper to get your daily news while you attempt side quests, mini-games, and so many other neat features. Don't miss out on this Pokémon ROM hack.

Pokémon Ash Gray

Pokémon Ash Gray is another Pokémon FireRed hack that you won't want to miss out on. You play as Ash Ketchum, including through the events of the first episode of the beloved Pokémon series. So yes, you get to play with Pikachu, just like Ash himself.

The game embarks on a quest that parallels events from the series and some of the movies. Which we happen to think is a nice little bonus to an already awesome game. As you play, you can catch all the same Pokémon Ash finds during the series, but don't worry; you don't have to play with them.

Pokémon Ash Gray lacks a few features, like Mega Evolution, that some of the previous ROM hacks boast, but it captures all of your favorite Pokémon games' standard gameplay. Who can say “no” to that?

Now onto some of our favorite entirely fan-made Pokémon games. Seriously, it's not fair that these gamers are so talented that they can… create entire Pokémon games.

Pokémon Prism

Pokémon Prism is an insanely fun ROM hack based on PokémonCrystal for Game Boy Color. You'll need to ensure that you have an emulator or cartridge to play PokémonPrism, but it's worth the effort to set it up.

The game begins with the Dragon Trainer's child, Lance, playing in a minecart that suddenly loses control and flies down an old track in the region of Naljo. From there, the player adopts a Lavitar and sets off through Naljo to collect gym badges, play mini-games, and encounter over 200 different Pokémon species.

Pokémon 3D

Pokémon 3D is a truly remarkable fan-made game that simulates classic Pokémon in a 3D pop-up style. Players take direct control of their Pokémon's movements and attack sequences, allowing you to choose to retreat while they have their cool-off periods. You can explore the 3D environment and interact with other trainers and Pokémon throughout the game.

This game came out in 2015, and players are still playing the game today. There's a vibrant and active community on the Pokémon 3D site, discussing past and future updates. It's a fun one to try out!

Pokémon Reborn

Best Pokemon Ds Rom Hacks Reddit

If you're looking for a lengthy Pokémon game to try out, PokémonReborn provides players with over 55 hours of gameplay! This fan-made game was designed in an RPG Maker rather than in ROM, so it's not quite a ROM hack.

The game is set in Reborn City, a polluted mess of a metropolis plagued with crime. You are tasked with collaborating with the other Pokémon trainers to stop the evil organization that has taken control of the city! Sounds fun, right? Pokémon Reborn features 18 different gyms to battle in and introduces the concept of Field Effects into the game. These effects can be used to change up the battlefield to favor different types of Pokémon.

Pokémon Godra

Out of all of the other fan-made Pokémon games, Pokémon Godra focuses on the trainer rather than the Pokémon. This popular ROM hack allows you to choose your own career path: Trainer Coalition Leader, Military General, Safari Zone Warden, and many other fun careers. From there, you can find Pokémon from various versions of the classic games, delve into new quests, storylines, and explore the Western and Eastern portions of the map.

Pokémon Dark Rising

Often described as the Dark Souls of Pokémon games, you'll want to download Pokémon Dark Rising if you love complex and difficult games. You play as a young trainer from the Core Region who wakes up from a strange dream to find a peculiar Pokémon you've never seen before. Once the Pokémon choose you as its trainer, you'll have to work together to save the world!

This game has a similar premise to a few mentioned above, but the perk to Pokémon Dark Rising is that you can start with all Dragon-types and discover Pokémon from the first five generations.

Pokémon Light Platinum

Pokémon Light Platinum pits old-generation and new-generation against one another, bringing the best of Pokémon Ruby with a variety of regions, gyms, and elite-level graphics you won't see in other Pokémon ROM hacks. The game keeps its players entertained with 16 badges and the ability to compete in two Pokémon leagues in pursuit of competing in the World Championship. PokémonLight Platinum makes for a great alternative to some of the original Pokémon games.

Pokémon Phoenix Rising

Set in the region Hawthorne, a war-torn region under the mercy of a tyrannical king, Pokémon Phoenix Rising is a fan-made game developed using RPG Maker XP. Trainers are tasked with finding and resurrecting the legendary Ho-oh to restore peace and harmony throughout the region of Hawthorne.

Pokémon Phoenix Rising features so many impressive features that you'll never find in a mainstream Pokémon game. You control the game's outcome by making choice-based decisions that will affect the quests and in-game events you encounter. You can even customize your skill-trees to design different players with different play-styes.

Pokémon Uranium

Following the events of a nuclear explosion in the Tandor region, a young Pokémon trainer sets off on a discovery journey as they face strange occurrences and irradiated Pokémon. Pokémon Uranium took nine years to develop before its release in 2016, and this fan-made Pokémon game is one of the most popular ones available to download.

The game features 150 original Pokémon and features some new irradiated Pokémon you've never seen before. Trainers can obtain eight badges, defeat the Tandor league, and work to stop nuclear meltdowns through the region.

Pokémon Insurgence

If you've ever played with RPG Maker XP, you'll be familiar with how this fan-made Pokémon game was created. Pokémon Insurgence takes a turn towards the dark side, taking players through the region of Torren where war has broken out between those who seek to obtain world domination. The game allows you to customize your trainer, use Mega Evolutions, access secret bases, and create delta species.

What's a delta species? You mix two species of Pokémon to create a brand-new Pokémon! PokémonInsurgence gives players limitless options and opportunities to explore the world of Pokémon through a new world. There are over 720 Pokémon to play with as you venture through the region of Torren!

These hacks vary greatly when it comes to story, theme, difficulty and Catch-able Pokemon. Anyone who has played most of the hacks listed would probably rank them differently, However, this is a great list if you are looking for the best available on the GBA so far. Download a few that might interest you, and find out what you like the best.

NOTE: The majority of the following hacks are completed. Some Hacks ranked are still in beta, but are nearly completed or fully playable from start to finish.

20. Pokemon CAWPS

Juegos Pokemon Hack Ds

– Created By Crizzle
In Pokemon CAWPS you play as young woman or guy that becomes a police officer in the Hoenn region. This hack is for mature audiences only. It features a lot of very offensive language and content so be ready for that before playing. Encountering drug dealers, murderers, scum bags and crazy people might not be your thing. I found some of it to be funny at times, while some of it felt forced also. I can see more sensitive players hating this sort content though. The main highlight is you get to play as a police officer, that’s really cool. Be sure to grind a lot, as certain areas have difficulty spikes. Pokemon up to gen 3 (386 of them) have been added to CAWPS. Overall a decent cop vs bad people sort of story, that won’t be for everyone.

Pokemon

19. Pokemon Outlaw

– Created By Crizzle
In Outlaw, you play as a homeless 15-year-old boy who lives in the slums of the Kanto region. He dreams of making it big someday and be a Pokemon master. Most of the people in this world are very rude, gross, weird and negative. Some of the commentaries are funny, strange and violent, it might be offensive to many players though. It’s another mature one by creator Crizzle. It deals with the hardships of life living at rock bottom. The majority of the people in the world of Outlaw are very poor, it’s not a happy story at all, but I thought it was different and enjoyable as long as you can handle the over the top negative dialogue.

18. Pokemon Korosu

– Created By Crizzle
“Korosu” means to kill in Japanese. There is a lot of killing going on in Pokemon Korosu. This is another one for mature audiences that can handle sensitive content. Inspired by the Kill Bill movies, you play as a young girl with nothing to lose. Her family has been killed and a gang had captured her to be a slave for them. She eventually escaped and is now out to make the ones that killed her family and slaved her, pay for what they have done with death. In some instances, the hack will let you make moral choices to kill or let scumbags go. The game takes place in the Sevii Islands and Kanto Regions. All Pokemon from up to gen 3 have been added with a few from gen 4 also. Like other hacks created by Crizzle, level spikes come out of nowhere, so be sure to grind a lot. Overall Korosu is a pretty good violent revenge-themed game.

17. Pokemon Fuligin

– Created By Sloo
– See It On Amazon
Pokemon Fuligin is a simple but very solid rom hack where you play as a boy or a girl in the small region of ALORA. Following your big brother’s footsteps, you will eventually join Team Rocket on a quest to work yourself through the ranks to become a leader in Team Rocket. This hack features new gym leaders, All Pokemon up to gen 3 and difficulty that scales up Gradually while playing. So you won’t have to grind much in this one if you don’t want to. What’s best about Fuligin is its clean and interesting storyline, and the ability to catch all Pokemon in the game.

16.Pokemon Victory Fire

Play as a boy or a girl who are on a quest to become the greatest trainers in the Tyron region. Starting from a dream come true, you will receive your first Pokemon. You decide you want to leave your hometown to become the best trainer you can be, but then professor Ivan is under attack by Team Mirage members. Team Mirage is a very mysterious gang. Not much is known about them, only that they are bad and planning something big for the region. Stopping them and finding out what they are up to is your main quest while encountering, battling and catching Pokemon from GEN 4 and 5. The English grammar is off a bit, but the story and graphics make this one a very fun and engaging experience.

15. Pokemon Ruby Destiny Series

– Created By destinedjagold
– See It On Amazon
Pokemon Ruby Destiny is a solid series of four completed hacks named “Reign of Legends”, “Rescue Rangers”, “Life of Guardians”, and “Broken Timeline” (Play in this order). The earliest game dated all the way back to 2007. All games have stories that connect to one another and should be played in the correct order. They are all pretty good and interesting, a worthy series to try out. Best to check out the link below to get the full scoop about these. (There are too many high lights to talk about, and this is just a top list :D).

14. Pokemon ShinyGold Sigma

– Created By Aiolia.leo
– See It On Amazon
Pokemon ShinyGold Sigma is a fire red hack on steroids. Many improvements have been implemented in the Johto Region. With even more regions added such as Kanto, Orange Archipelago, and Battle Frontier. If you want to catch Pokemon this is one of the larger hacks, featuring over 850 Pokemon to catch with Mega Evolution’s. Some special touches like gym leaders offering rematches are cool and new characters, sprites, places, and music are all done well. The story is pretty cool also, but a bit everywhere. Shiny Gold is a good one if you want hours and hours of gameplay and Mega Evolution’s.

13. Pokemon Snakewood

– Created By Cutlerine
– See It On Amazon
You awaken in a town that is infested with Zombie Pokemon (You can catch them and Battle), monsters and people. This zombie plague is spreading fast. You and Prof. Birch are on a quest to find your brother and Prof. Birch’s daughter who has been missing for a while. In this world, you don’t know who is telling the truth and who isn’t. You will encounter new areas like the hidden Meathouse, the maddening Island and Hoenn University of Film. Snakewood has a darker theme than many other hacks, but I would say it’s still rated PG for the most part. The zombie story is told well and the theme is executed brilliantly. I freaked out when I first encountered a zombie Pikachu lol. There are difficulty spikes, so be sure to level grind often.

Nintendo Ds Rom Hacks

12. Pokemon Clover

– Created By Squeetz
Clover is currently an incomplete rom hack that is already very impressive with more than 8 gyms added, a new region called Fochun, 386 original fakemon to catch and battle with. Play as a young trainer from Veeper town of Fochun, who is on a journey to collect badges. Team Karma is the group standing in your way. A lot of new little touches in this one stand out like audio, wonder trading and new custom and existing items. Hopefully, the developer continues to update this because it’s a great one. Gotta Love The Fakemons!

11. Pokemon Sweet

In Pokemon Sweet, you will start out in a region that looks like Kanto but made entirely out of candy and sweets. This hack is unique in every way. It’s fun to capture or craft candified Pokemon while filling up the pages of your cookbook. This game is all about exploring, finding hidden items and capturing. You will be rewarded for your efforts in very sweet ways :D. I ranked this one so high because it was enjoyable and had a unique theme with some new gameplay elements. People and rivals are all about the sweets here in Kanto now. It’s a great one to play for candy lovers, xD!

The main features and additions to this version include updated graphics and maps, real-time Day and Night, new music, weather effects, New region (Orange Islands), new hidden areas and new gameplay elements. It’s an amazing hack that’s technically finished, but the developer says it will be eventually updated with even more content. It’s a safe bet, that you will probably enjoy Liquid Crystal if you enjoyed the original Pokemon Crystal.

9. Pokemon DarkRising Series

– Created By DarkRisingGirl
– See It On Amazon
The DarkRising series is high quality. Many Pokemon gamers consider these to be some of the best hacks around. For others, they are a turn off because of the difficulty level. They are a bit challenging, it just means you have to level grind more and choose your fights a bit more carefully. These games are large. With over 5 generations of Pokemons to catch, new attacks, new characters, and a new region. It really does feel like a retail Pokemon game in certain ways. The story for each of these games is very imaginative, interesting, and all are connected to one another. Overall if you are up for a neat story and challenging gameplay give this series a try.

8. Pokemon Adventure – Red Chapter

– Created By Aethestode
A really neat hack that follows the Pokemon Red Chapter Manga exactly with some extra events added in. The main character named Red is on a quest to become the best Pokemon trainer ever. There are many obstacles in his way through, such as rival Blue and Green as well as Team Rocket. The graphics and sprites are new in this one and done nicely. Red Chapter is not finished yet but already feels completed and of high quality, the developer says he will continue to update it even more. A lot of regions are available to explore such as Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Orre, Sevii Island, Orange Archipelago, Decolore Archipelago, and Nanomi Mirage Island.

7.Pokemon Flora Sky

– Created By 12345
– See It On Amazon
This is an old hack from 2011. I played it years ago and remember loving it. The Final unofficial Dex Version was recently released in 2016. You can really tell the developer cared a lot about this hack by the way the story is told, about these legendary Pokemon. The story is about defending against mega powers that want to control different types of Pokemon to rule the world. The new features added are the story, characters, attack moves, legendary Pokemon, events, and 386 different Pokemon to catch with all new sprites. It might feel a bit outdated for some but I believe its still among the best.

Pokemon Ash Gray is inspired by the original Pokemon anime cartoon series. You play as Ash Ketchum with Pikachu by your side. Ash is on a quest to become the best Pokemon trainer ever. In this adventure, you will come across over 116 events from the anime with two from the original Pokemon movie. Every Pokemon that Ash catches from the shows, you can catch in this game. It’s a very well done tribute to Ash Ketchum and the Pokemon anime’s.

5. Pokemon Resolute

A really well-made hack with Mega Evolution’s. This is actually the squeal to “Pokemon Victory Fire” (Our #16 ranked hack). Resolute has a very mysterious engaging story that works well and feels tough. Team Mirage is trying to rise up once again and push out a reform against the people. What is this reform? Play to find out. All Pokemon from gen 1,2,3 are here, some from 5,6,7 are also available to catch. You will be playing through the Sylon, Tyron, Johto regions. This game originally had very poor grammar but has been patched with much better English.

4. Pokemon Vega Minus

– Created By Dr. Akimbo & MKCocoon
– See It On Amazon
Pokemon Vega is the best hack for Fakemons. The Fakemons are all new with over 181 to catch. Vega also includes 56 Pokemon from newer generations. Along with the new pokemon, over 70 new attack moves have been added to Vega. You also get to play in a brand new region known as Tohoak. By far the best foreign-language hack ever created, glad it was eventually patched to English. The Vega Minus version makes things a bit easier. Gets rid of all the minor frustrating areas and difficulties of VEGA. I would recommend the Minus version if you decide to play this, but the original game is just fine also.

3. Pokemon Gaia

– Created By Spherical Ice
Pokemon Gaia is very impressive already. The developer is not finished with it (6 gyms so far), but the game already feels high in quality. Gaia could pass off as a retail Pokemon game when it’s finished and will definitely be the best GBA rom hack so far (In my opinion). The new Orbtus region is very impressive, with a lot to explore and see. The graphics are very clean in Gaia, even better than official GBA Pokemon games. Some of the new features include Mega evolution’s, new items and moves, rock climbing and a few mini-games. Best of all is the story and characters, but I won’t spoil it for you, just play this game right now!

2. Pokemon Light Platinum

– Created By Wesley FG
– See It On Amazon
Pokemon Light Platinum originally released in 2012, and the final release was on February 25th, 2017. Many Pokemon gamers still consider Light Platinum to be the greatest Pokemon hack ever created. I agree it is amazing in every way. The story and everything that is new like the Zhery region, legendary Pokemon, new rivals and graphics fit together almost perfectly. So good, that developers are working hard on a remake for the Nintendo DS. A must play, if you are interested in checking a few GBA hacks out, make sure you download this one also.

1. Pokemon Glazed

– Created By redriders180
– See It On Amazon
Until Gaia is finished, Pokemon Glazed is my favorite hack and is among the highest quality of the completed hacks. The journey has so many ups and downs in it, keeping the excitement and drama high. I became very invested in the characters, regions, and story. The regions include Tunod, Johto, and Rankor. The difficulty feels perfect in Glazed, not a walk in the park in some areas, but not impossible either. You don’t need to level grind too much. Overall I think Glazed is a must download and play. I really can’t see anyone who loves Pokemon games, not liking Glazed. I actually liked it better than some of the official games.
